Afro-Cuban Drumming and Dancing with Alberto Limonta

Norwich MIND, Festival of Cultures: Saturday 14th August

St. Gregory’s Centre for the Arts, Norwich: Sunday 15th August

Come to St Gregory’s Centre for the Arts, (St Gregory’s Alley, Norwich, NR2 1ER) to learn rumba dancing and drumming direct from Cuba. Limonta will also offer a flavour of one of rumba’s folkloric influences; ‘palo’, a sacred ‘bantu’/'congolese’ Cuban tradition. One of the earliest and most powerful African influence on Cuban culture.

On the Saturday Limon will be offering workshops in a range of Cuban styles as part of the Norwich Mind Festival of Cultures. Culture Crossroads will also be providing a range of information about Cuban culture and traditions.

Alberto Limonta (aka ‘Limon’) is one of the finest exponents of Cuban percussion and dance and has been living and working in the UK since 2004.  He is a good friend of Norfolk’s own master Cuban percussionist Jose Ferrera Mulen, Limonta is a born ‘Habanero’ (from Havana) and has been immersed in the rhythms and movements of the many traditions created and developed in that incredible city all his life. He has played with many outstanding groups over the years and his time with one of Cuba’s foremost rumba group ‘Clave y Guaguanco’ marks him out as a leading authority on traditional rumba drumming and dancing as well as the many other folkloric styles that feed into the ‘Clave y Guaguanco’ sound.

Come along to Bar Tapas (16-20 Exchange Street, Norwich, NR2 1AT) the night before (Saturday 14 August from 11pm) for a sneak preview and to dance the night away to a fine selection of the best in contemporary Cuban music selected by Limon himself.
